Celebrating the Life of Sister Elizabeth Zielinski, OSF

1936-2017

Sister Elizabeth Zielinski died on April 28, 2017, at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio, after a brave battle with cancer.  Sister Elizabeth, the daughter of John and Jean Zielinski, came to the convent from Immaculate Conception Parish in Cleveland, Ohio.  She made her first profession of religious vows in 1956 and her final vows in 1959.  She attributed her vocation to the Sylvania Franciscans to her dear Mother who was taught by the Sisters, always spoke favorably of them and prayed that Elizabeth would become one someday.

In Sister Elizabeth’s 60 plus years in religious life, she served her Sisters and the people of God in a variety of ministries.  She taught for 27 years in elementary schools in Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio.  The next 30 plus years were full of a variety of ministries, mostly in Ohio.  She returned to the Motherhouse of the Sisters to be a Chapel sacristan, provider of transportation for the elder Sisters, a nursing home aide and home health aide.  She also worked as a parish secretary in Detroit.  Sister spent several years serving the Sisters at Rosary Care Center, where her most recent ministry was accompanying the Sisters to their appointments.  Her illness eventually made it impossible for her to continue her ministry. Sister then entered the Third Age Ministry at Our Lady of Grace Assisted Living where she offered her prayers and suffering for the intentions of the Community, the Church and the world. When her cancer became more difficult to tolerate she moved to Rosary Care Center.

Sister Elizabeth will be missed by her Sisters in Community, her friends and family who visited her often and always brought broccoli soup, her favorite.  She would have celebrated her 81st birthday on May 22, 2017.  She died a few days before the 2017 MS Walk which she participated in for 13 years walking a total of 130 miles.  The Sister and Associate participants of the MS Walk this year dedicated the walk to her.

There will be a Welcoming Service for Sister Elizabeth in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 4, 2017, followed by visitation until 8:00 PM.  Visitation will continue on Friday, May 5, 2017, beginning at 9:30 AM until the funeral liturgy at 4:30 PM.  Interment will be in Porta Coeli Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds of the Sisters.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio.
