New Lourdes University President Named

The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania announced today (June 9) that Mary Ann Gawelek, Ed.D., provost and dean of faculty at Seton Hill University, will be president of Lourdes University, the Sisters’ sponsored ministry in higher education.  Since 1996, Dr. Gawelek was responsible for all undergraduate and graduate programs for the 2,500 student Catholic liberal arts university, located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, 25 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.  She received doctorate and master’s degrees in counselling psychology from Boston University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from the Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.

“Having served at a Catholic liberal arts university for 20 years, Dr. Gawelek’s breadth of administrative and academic experience resonates with the Lourdes University community,” said Sister Mary Jon Wagner, Congregational Minister of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, Ohio.  “She truly understands our Catholic and Franciscan mission, values, and vision.”

Dr. Gawelek was named the 10th president of Lourdes, founded by the Sisters of St. Francis in 1958, and offering degrees in arts and sciences, business, leadership, education, human services and nursing.  Her term will start July 1.
