Justice & Peace

With our Mission always before us, the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania strive to live out our Directional Statement and our Peacemaking Initiative, by joining the global family in work for social change through lifestyle, prayer, ministries and advocacy efforts.

Ministries

Placing our individual gifts and talents in service of the needs of God’s people, we are engaged in such diverse ministries as education, healthcare, social services, religious education, media, law, art, parish and retirement ministries, and spiritual direction.

Prayer Focus

Our prayer focus for 2021 is on bringing unity through diversity to our country. Reflecting on racism within ourselves and our society, we seek respect for all people and healing for racial injustice.

Experience

Regular tours of the Motherhouse grounds and special prayer services are conducted throughout the year. The Sylvania Franciscans provide several opportunities for prayer and contemplation, including mini-pilgrimages and Lent and Advent services.

On Earth Day, Arborist Scott Kirby, Juan Trejo and Tomas Moctezuma planted a beautiful 7' Carolina Silverbell in the arboretum, being sure to leave ample space around it. This little tree replaces the beloved 83-year-old Carolina Silverbell that we lost in a storm last summer. Mother Adelaide planted that tree in approximately 1944 and, when it died last year, it was 65' tall with a crown spread of 143' feet - approximately half of a football field!🤯 Each April/May, the Carolina Silverbell produces snowy white bell-shaped flowers before it fills out and creates one of the prettiest shade canopies on campus. The specimen remains rare in NW Ohio, so let’s pray that our new Carolina Silverbell thrives for the next 80 years. ... See MoreSee Less

Happy Arbor Day! We have a few dozen new trees planted today in honor of Arbor Day, thanks to our Arborist Scott Kirby with Juan Trejo and Tomas Moctezuma. The photo on the left is the new planting, where they cleared out gobs of invasive honeysuckle to make room for new trees. The photo on the right? The next area to be tackled. In this next patch of overgrown woods, the guys found remnants of one of the original pathways of Mother Adelaide and the earlier Sylvania Franciscans. Looking forward to seeing it in months to come! ... See MoreSee Less

Easter Came Later

It was the way the sun shone on the vivid purple blossoms and the green velvety leaves. It’s one of those encounters, a truth beyond telling, as most experiences of the heart and spirit are. The stone was rolled back.
