Summertime – A Celebration of Creation’s Glory
By Sister Theresa Darga
Ah, summertime! A season for rest and renewal — for admiring the burst of colors in our gardens, for enjoying a picnic or barbeque with family and friends, for diving into a good book or two, and for marveling at radiant sunrises, glowing sunsets and star-filled skies. These simple moments invite us to pause and praise our Creator God!
The humble man of Assisi, St. Francis, saw the divine in everyday experiences. He believed all of creation and everyday moments were soaked with the sacredness of God. Over 800 years ago, as he wandered the hills of Assisi, words of inspiration danced in his mind. His heart overflowed with gratitude and he composed the joyful hymn of praise we know as the Canticle of Creation. His heart cried out,
Most High, all-powerful, good Lord,
To You belongs all praise, glory, and honor.
Francis continued his praises by embracing all of nature as part of his family: Brother Sun, Sister Moon and Stars, Brother Wind and Air, Sister Water, and Sister Mother Earth. This inspired prayer of gratitude from his tender heart continually thanked God for all living things.
His deep reverence reminds us to treasure the world around us, not take it for granted.
As we listen to the Canticle echo through the forests, oceans, mountains, and city streets,
may we remember that we are not apart from creation—we are part of it.
May we walk gently on this earth,
blessing instead of consuming,
healing instead of harming,
singing instead of shouting.
How will you live the Canticle of Creation this summer?
