Sister Martha Herkness felt led by God to become a Sister as she read a book about the
religious orders in the United States. In 1965, Sister made her first profession in the religious
congregation and professed final vows in 1971. Sister Martha became an LPN at Providence
School of Nursing in Sandusky, received a BS degree from Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio
and a MA in counseling from Siena Heights College in Adrian, Michigan. During her 55 years
of religious life, Sister wore many hats using her talents in medical records, counseling, retreat
assistant, core member of the House of Prayer, print shop manager, housing coordinator and
purchasing director.
