What’s the Buzz?
April 8, 2026This past week, we welcomed Amy Stone, a retired educator from Ohio State University Extension, who led an informative session on the invasive spotted lanternfly. In addition to learning about the pest and its impact, attendees were introduced to the strategic approach being implemented to manage it on campus.
As part of an integrated pest management plan developed by the Grounds and Sustainability teams, traps will be used as one method to help control the spotted lanternfly population. These traps are especially meaningful because they were created in collaboration with students from Northview Environmental Science classes—resulting in more than 40 traps ready for installation.
As you move around campus in the coming weeks, keep an eye out for these traps on trees. Feel free to take a closer look and see firsthand how they’re working to capture this invasive species.
This work reflects the call of Laudato Si’ to care for our “common home” through thoughtful stewardship and ecological responsibility. By addressing invasive species in a way that prioritizes education, collaboration, and environmentally conscious practices, our community is taking meaningful steps toward living in right relationship with the land.
